Khwai River and Savute Elephant

Khwai River Lodge and Savute Elephant Camp Itinerary

Day 1
Upon arrival at Maun Airport you will clear customs and collect your luggage. A representative of Mack Air will meet you in the Arrivals Hall and will accompany you to the light aircraft for your 30 minute flight into Khwai airstrip, across the Okavango Delta.

Nestled on the edge of a leadwood and fig tree forest, overlooking the vast Khwai River floodplain and beyond into the Moremi Wildlife Reserve, sits the luxurious Khwai River Lodge.

Khwai River Lodge lies just outside the Moremi Reserve, with game drive access into this wildlife haven, and accommodates its guests in luxury tents situated on raised wooden platforms with traditional African thatch roof. Private decks with easy chairs and hammocks provide panoramic views.  Inside you’ll find a netted four-poster bed, an elegant bathroom, a stocked mini bar and discreet air conditioning.

Khwai River Lodge offers al fresco dining with views into the Reserve, a gym and spa facilities, a 20m swimming pool, a high-powered telescope, internet access and satellite TV, a traditional Boma, a curio shop and small reference library.
Day 2
Khwai is renowned for its large concentrations of mammals and it is not unusual to see many different types of wildlife from the comfort of your own private deck. As a year round destination for wildlife, predators can regularly be seen in the area, rated as one of the most prolific in Botswana for viewing wildlife. The exceptional location of Khwai makes its a regular host to Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah and Wild Dogs. Birdlife can also be viewed in abundance with exceptional sightings of wildfowl and raptors near the lodge. This is the perfect location for observing the perennial drama of the African bushveld and provides excellent birding.

Morning and evening game drives into the Moremi Wildlife Reserve provide excellent sighting opportunities whereas spotlight drives at night, conducted outside the reserve, provide viewing of lesser-known nocturnal creatures.

A cultural visit to a local village, a game walk in the company of a professional guide, or relaxing on the viewing platform overlooking the river are all part of the day's activities at Khwai River Lodge.

Day 3
After an early morning activity, breakfast and brunch, you will be chartered from Khwai airstrip to Savuti airstrip, 35 minutes away.

The Savuti Channel stretches from the Linyanti River to the Savute Marsh.  Unpredictable, with a history or flooding or drying up, the Channel has mystified geologists for many generations.

The lodge offers Al fresco dining with views, a 20m swimming pool, a high powered telescope, internet access, and satellite TV, a traditional Boma, a curio shop.  There is also a small reference library.

Savute Elephant Lodge accommodates its guest in 12 tented residences, raised on wooden platforms. Each has an outdoor lounge and is shaded by a traditional thatch roof.  The large, private decks are furnished with easy chairs and a hammock, ideal for viewing wildlife, or for enjoying a private dinner in complete privacy.  The rooms are luxurious with four-poster beds with mosquito netting, a lavishly appointed bathroom and dressing room, a fully-stocked minibar and discreet air conditioning.
Day 4
The area is known for its exciting game viewing and birding. Savute Elephant Camp offers game viewing activities in the morning and late afternoons. These activities take place on a safari viewing vehicle, designed for your comfort and safety.

Bird and wild animal viewing from all the decks and the swimming pool is amazing, and you will also be taken to see the Bushman rock paintings in the vicinity.

The opportunities to view game and the astonishing bird life of this area are unsurpassed. The camp's Rangers are almost telepathic in their ability to find game. They will point to what appears to be an empty horizon. From the emptiness, magnificent creatures will appear, as if conjured by some unearthly magic.

In the early morning and evening, your professional Guide will guide your four-wheel drive safari vehicle to within close viewing range of wildlife. And of course the elephants that congregate at the water hole right in front of the lodge.
